Brown Uzbek Suzani Ottoman

This handsome ottoman has a high quality upholstery fabric on top which perfectly echoes the exclusive Uzbek suzani that encircles it. And, as is the case for many suzanis, the deep brown earthy colour and symbols woven into the fabric reflect beautifully nature’s beauty.

The term suzani (from suzan, the Persian word for “needle”) describes an embroidered dowry textile. For centuries, nomadic women from the Central Asian regions used lush silk threads to embroider on a cotton base. According to custom, a suzani was started every time a girl was born, in preparation for her wedding. There is an ancient Uzbek saying that states “in order that wedding is not stopped in the house, the daughter remain healthy and joy is not interrupted, leave a small pattern on your suzani unfinished”. In short, the suzani is not just a special part of Uzbek culture and art - it is an important element of the whole nation’s life.

The two pattis (or strips) around the top and the middle of the ottoman are also handmade Uzbek suzani borders.
