Bursa Silk Red Tulip Runner

This eye-catching table runner features a dramatic design on a red background of slender tulip motifs with carnations, running riot on Bursa silk.

In Turkey similar motifs decorate walls of Iznik tiles, glide across silk textiles, sparkle from the gilding on steel armour and are shown gracefully erect on beautiful carpets from the Ladik region. In fact the craze for this flower among Ottoman court society gave rise to the Tulip Period, or Tulip Era, from 1718 – 1730. As for Bursa silk, traditionally the city of Bursa in Turkey was famous for being the largest centre of the silk trade on the lucrative Silk Road during the Byzantine, and later the Ottoman, empires.

The runner has a lining made from Indian silk.
