Butterfly and Flowers Stamp Paper Miniature Painting

The soft colours of the tender flowers, the supple grace of the flowers, the delicate hovering of the butterfly, are captured with life-like realism in this Rajasthani miniature. This painting was done on used stamp paper belonging to the Jaipur Government. This type of paper was preferred because it is free of artificial chemicals and therefore does not damage the quality and sheen of the paint over time.

Indian miniature painting is an art form that can be traced back to the 10th century. Jaipur in Rajasthan was, and still is, the centre for these fine miniatures. The artists use a palette of natural organic colours, as well as real silver and gold, to bring miniature paintings to vibrant life. As well as handmade paper, a variety of other materials are also used to paint on, including wood, ivory and marble. Read more on A World in Miniature in the Arastan Journey blog.
