Colourful Blooms Stamp Paper Miniature Painting

A soft olive-green silk surround highlights the vibrant colours and splendid profusion of elegant flowers, very much in the Mughal style, in the centre of this Rajasthani painting. A single fur strand brush has been used to create the fine and delicate lines seen here. The elaborate border is also made up of subtle flowers, set off by the thin gleaming gold frame around the central bouquet of flowers.

This painting was done on used stamp paper belonging to the Jaipur Government. This type of paper was preferred because it is free of artificial chemicals and therefore does not damage the quality and sheen of the paint over time.

Indian miniature painting is an art form that can be traced back to the 10th century. Jaipur in Rajasthan was, and still is, the centre for these fine miniatures. The artists use a palette of natural organic colours, as well as real silver and gold, to bring miniature paintings to vibrant life. Read more on A World in Miniature in the Arastan Journey blog.
