Dense Geometric Suzani Soumak Kilim

With a dark red and black colour palette, and densely-packed geometric design, more typical of some Afghan kilims than other "suzani" kilims, this flatweave is handwoven from an area near the Iran-Afghan border. As a soumak it is woven using a technique where the wefts are wrapped over the warps and then drawn under, which makes them typically stronger than regular kilims. Whilst the detailed patterns are said to recall Central Asian embroidered suzanis–hence the name suzani kilim–it is likely that this is a confusion arising from the Afshari people in Kerman province in Iran using the name "suzani" to describe their soumaks! Regardless of the confusing terminology, this vintage rug with its uniform geometric patterns would be a great addition to any home.
