Fantasy Flowers Rishtan Ceramic Bowl

Turquoise and lapis-coloured foliage is set against a bright, white background in the unusual design of this ceramic bowl. Fantastical, two-headed flowers, seemingly weighed down by their sheer strangeness, form a grove in the well of the bowl. This curious floral motif is repeated on the outer surface, while a more sedate pattern of flowers and scrolls occupies the inner border.

The work of master ceramist Rustam Usmanov, one of the most celebrated contemporary innovators of Rishtan ceramics, this ceramic bowl is an exceptional example of a long-established Central Asian tradition of handmade earthenware. Rishtan is a village on the branch of the Silk Route that passed through Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley. The ceramic arts were first practised in Rishtan in the 14th century, borrowing inspiration and know-how from both the blue-and-white cobalt porcelain of China and the deep blue and turquoise tiles of Andalusia.
