Fish Reverse Glass Mirror

A rare and beautiful example of the reverse-glass painting heritage of Rajasthan. Painstakingly hand worked using ancient tools and techniques, today just a few families remain who authentically practice this craft. The decorative floral and fish motifs incorporated into this mirror frame are reminiscent of the Mughal era.

In North India, reverse glass painting flourished during the 16-18th century, especially in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. It is believed to have been encouraged, in part, by the purdah tradition, where glass dividers were painted to separate the women's quarters from the rest of the royal household.
