Geometric Flowers Suzani Soumak Kilim

This charming kilim from Iran is called a "soumak kilim" because it is woven using two methods: weft wrapping (soumak) and simple flatweave. But it is also labelled a "suzani kilim" because its detailed patterns recall the traditional embroidered dowry textiles of Central Asia.

The small field of this kilim features highly geometrised flowers (perhaps roses, or pomegranate flowers, or even peonies) against a light ivory background. The composition is surrounded by several borders containing geometric motifs, the most prominent of which is a simplified, crab-like version of the common Herati border motif sometimes known as "turtle and vine scroll".
