Labijar Uzbek Kilim

This charmingly simple kilim was probably woven by Uzbeks from the Labijar region in Afghanistan. As is common with Labijar kilims, horizontal bands of undecorated weave in ivory-white or natural light-brown tones are alternated with bands coloured in yellow, light indigo blue and red or brown, and interspersed with bands of geometric motifs-here, simple lozenges and small chevrons.

The Uzbeks are a Turkic people descended from the Uigurs of East Turkestan. They migrated westward in the Timurid period and now inhabit not only Uzbekistan, but also parts of northern Afghanistan and of several other Central Asian nations. They are known to produce various types of kilims, usually with banded geometric designs.
