Laos Katu Tribal Beaded Skirt

This graphically stunning Katu skirt in red and black cotton has white glass beads that are not sewn but painstakingly strung on the weft threads and slid into place as the piece is woven. This is the traditional weaving and clothing style of the Katu tribe from southern Laos. The Katu women weave textiles on a back strap loom – an age-old technique for creating cloth – which is then decorated with beads, and typically sewn into skirts and tunics.

This skirt is worn pleated with a belt, or could be opened and worn as a stole.
