Malatya Cicim Kilim with Interlocking Diamonds

This elegant cicim kilim from Malatya in eastern Anatolia features a simple, banded central field sandwiched between two skirts that are busily decorated with various diamond shapes. The dominant design-two interlocked diamonds-is surrounded by a fine web of diagonal lines emanating from the diamonds like ripples in a pond. The interlocked diamonds in each skirt are framed by colourful horizontal borders crowded with star motifs.

The raised surface of the thread used to create the complex patterns in the skirts can easily be mistaken for embroidery. In fact, the motifs are created with a supplementary weft (usually using a thicker yarn) interlaced into the fabric during the weaving process. This technique is known as cicim in Turkey.
