Muddy River Gabbeh Carpet

The composition of this Gabbeh is the fabled river design, in this case likely representing a muddy brown silty riverbed, overlaid with blue flowing waters. A beautiful single border filled with rosettes frames the river field. Gorgeous oily wool and high pile gives it a glorious sheen.

Gabbeh rugs are woven by nomadic tribes from the Zagros Mountains area of southwestern Persia. The high altitude sheep from these areas yield a rich quality of wool with strong lanolin content, which is what gives high-quality Gabbehs their distinctive shine and gloss. This piece is probably woven by the Luri tribe. Most Luri tribal rugs are designed similarly to the Qashqai, but use dramatically different motifs and tend to use vivid colours which contrast sharply.

The structure of this carpet is denser and tighter than most rugs of this genre. All natural dyes.
