Peach and Blue Agra Jail Cotton Carpet

This beautiful vintage carpet, handwoven in cotton in Agra Jail, has a lovely calming design. As frequently seen in Jail carpets the colour scheme is unusual, here a smooth dark peach ground with light blue stylised floral motifs throughout the field and borders. The selvedges are a darker red.

Weaving of carpets and dhurries in Indian jails was originally introduced by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. He brought master weavers from Persia to teach inmates and, over time, their styles developed through the combination of Indian patterns into the traditional Mughal designs. Jail carpets, such as those from Agra, Amritsar and Lahore, are immensely collectable today.
