Rajasthani Miniature Painting of Colourful Flowers

A brilliant orange silk surround highlights the vibrant colours and splendid profusion of elegant flowers (very much in the Mughal style) in the centre of the painting. A single fur strand has been used to create the fine and delicate lines seen here. The elaborate border is also made up of subtle flowers, set off by the gleaming gold frame around the flowers.

Indian miniature painting is an art form that can be traced back to the 10th century. Jaipur in Rajasthan was, and still is, the centre for these fine miniatures. The artists use a palette of natural organic colours, as well as real silver and gold, to bring miniature paintings to vibrant life. As well as handmade paper, a variety of other materials are also used to paint on, including wood, ivory and marble. Read more on the history of miniature paintings at the Arastan Journey blog.
