Red and Ochre Diamond Agra Jail Cotton Carpet

Another distinctive and high quality Agra Jail carpet, handwoven in cotton. Whilst the motifs throughout the central field are relatively simple diamonds, the colour combination of bold red and subtle ochre catches the eye. Similar colours are used in the repeated geometric design of the major border, this time on a dark green background, and again in the narrow minor borders surrounding this.

Weaving of carpets and dhurries in Indian jails was originally introduced by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. He brought master weavers from Persia to teach inmates and, over time, their styles developed through the combination of Indian patterns into the traditional Mughal designs. Jail carpets, such as those from Agra, Amritsar and Lahore, are immensely collectable today.
