Red and Orange Uzbek Chequerboard Kilim

Old Uzbek kilim featuring various geometric motifs repeated in rows. The uniform dark red bands and narrow columns of zigzags provide more structure to the very regular design–undecorated squares are alternated with variants of diamond designs using red, green and orange to give an overall chequerboard effect.

The Uzbeks are a Turkic people descended from the Uigurs of East Turkestan. They migrated westward in the Timurid period and now inhabit not only Uzbekistan, but also parts of northern Afghanistan and of several other Central Asian nations. They are known to produce various types of kilims, usually with banded geometric designs such as this one.
