Vintage Suzani Burgundy Velvet Throw

The burgundy velvet fabric of this throw makes a perfect backdrop for the antique Tajik suzani border. The white silk fabric on which the pale pink and mauve embroidery was originally done was so worn that the embroidery had to be lifted and put on new fabric. The basma stitch used for the embroidery gives a delicate and life-like feel to the floral motifs along the border. The throw is finished with a black velvet piping. A lovely warm and soft throw, this piece would make a nice addition to any home.

The original suzani was an embroidered dowry textile from Tajikistan. Made by nomadic women in Central Asia, suzanis were used to decorate the home and to cover beds, tables and chests. According to custom, a suzani was started when a girl was born, in preparation for her wedding. Favourite motifs include the tree of life, the pomegranate, tulips and carnations, and evil eye amulets.
